Have you ever noticed that how you start your day often sets the tone for how your day unfolds? That's the notion behind my positive morning reading.
As I've mentioned before, every morning (or at least most mornings), I sit down on the couch with a cup of coffee and a book that inspires me. Most often the book either has an overtly change-the-world theme, or is about someone whose story inspires me (often both).
I'm not necessarily at my most positive first thing in the morning (in fact, lying in bed before I get up it's not all that unusual for my mind to engage in some variation of the question, "What the hell was I thinking?"). My positive morning reading helps me shift gears, both motivating me and reminding me what I really find compelling. Rather than feeling like I need to force myself into my day, my morning reading often leaves me feeling pulled into it in a very positive way.
It's usually no more than ten or fifteen minutes, but it's a fantastic investment in guiding the rest of the day in the direction I want to go.
(Here are a few of the books on my bookshelf.)

That's a habit that I've tried to get into often, and every time I stick with it, the benefits are real.
