I've been a fan of Alexandra Levit for quite some time (both as a person and as a professional), so I was psyched to hear that she has a new book coming out focused on career change called New Job, New You: A Guide to Reinventing Yourself in a Bright New Career.
After going through the book, my take on it is, if you have a career change coming up, or if you are pondering a career change, you owe it to yourself to read this book.
Why do I love this book? Mostly because, while you'll no doubt coming away feeling inspired and encouraged by the successful career change stories she profiles, you'll also find a lot of information on the real world practicalities you'll have to work through if you're going to make your career change stick.
The book is organized by according to the seven common motivations she heard as reasons behind career changes. As she describes it in the introductions, those motivations are:
- Family: When true work/life balance becomes a necessity
- Independence: When you've been bitten by the entrepreneurial bug
- Learning: When your bookish, curious side takes over
- Money: When an increase in earning potential is on the horizon
- Passion: When you year to do what you love with all your heart
- Setback: When one door closes, another one opens
- Talent: When you're too good at something not to give it a shot
Each chapter has several stories spotlighting people who have been successful in changing careers and what they have learned along the way. She follows the stories with several questions to help you understand if that particular category is one of your prime motivations.
She follows that up with the piece de resistance (in my opinion), "Putting it to Work," where she outlines numerous elements of reality you need to deal with and ideas and exercises for working through them. It's all about the real world, baby!
"OK, Curt, so I should buy the book...but what about that book giveaway you mentioned?"
Alexandra has kindly offered a book for me to offer as a giveaway. So here's the deal. Tell me in the comments below what you're going to do to make 2010 the best year yet in your life. I'll pick my favorite answer on January 29th (the day her book launches) and let you know who won.
Here are some ideas for the kinds of answers you might give:
- What new year's resolution/s are you going to make?
- What question are you going to explore?
- What change are you going to make?
- What are you going to accept? What are you going to stop accepting?
- How are you going to start being more true to yourself?
- How are you going to make sure your new year's resolutions really stick? (Put another way, what tips do you have for helping your new year's resolutions become reality?)
- What techniques will you use to help you love your life, regardless of what is actually happening?
As you can see, there are numerous ways you could spin your answer. And no doubt there are plenty more than I have listed here. So how about it? How are you going to make 2010 the best year yet? Let me know, and you just might win a book!

I was planning on making my career change in 2010 but getting laid off in Septermber due to a severe downturn in businesses spending money for consulting changed my timeline. Unfortunately, I was not quite ready to make the transition so I am struggling now with making it happen.
My past career has been more about the money because I was never home for more than a few days at a time. I lived out of a suitcase and the time I have been home with my wife, children and grandchildren have been great, despite the circumstances. My goal for the coming year is to enjoy my time more while working on replacing my income. I had gotten pretty complacent in my job because really the most difficult thing about it was the travel though I was dealing with multi-million dollar projects.
I am looking for more passion in my life and having more time with my family has helped to fuel that. My next quest for passion is in the work I want to do. My career has shown me that improvement really only occurs one person at a time and that is where I want to focus myself. I have set up an online MasterMind Group development website where a person can go and find others looking for MasterMind colleagues to spur each other on to success. I want to help those people. My goal there is to have one thousand members by the end of 2010.
I am not looking to win the book. I looking forward to purchasing it 12/29. I do need some help with this transition and I'm sure there is some great information.
Thanks for a place to talk about this!
Happy holidays to you and your family Curt!
